What is the difference between a four poster bed and a canopy bed?

Both are very similar in design and their origins date back to the 16th century and earlier. In their earliest forms, Four Poster Beds were simply the equivalent of a modern platform bed with four posts or colums that supported an upper framework, or tester, from which curtains or drapes were hung.

These curtains had two functions - to reduce the effects of cold draughts on the sleeping occupant and also to provide privacy.

Later a canopy , or roof, was added to the four poster bed. This canopy was covered with fabric and had two principle functions - to keep the warmth in and to catch insects and bugs falling from the roof.

Subsequently, as houses became warmer, designs were further modified to eliminate the canopy and to modify or eliminate the tester resulting in sub categories of four poster beds - half tester four poster beds, pencil post four poster beds and low and medium four poster beds.

In the USA the term "four poster bed" usually means that the bed has no tester or canopy while in Europe the term is more vague and can encompass full canopy beds.

All our poster beds are designed for easy self assembly - no scews, no pieces of plastic - with slot-in locking metal fastenings. All timber joints are made in the traditional manner - locking dovetail joints and mortice and tenon.

Traditional techniques

Our solid Teak is obtained from sustainable plantations.Whenever we can, we buy an old teak house and use the reclaimed teak. Each furniture piece is made by hand and original. We use only proven joinery techniques - mortice / tenon and dovetail joints.

Carving

All carving is carried out by hand by experienced craftsmen using traditional techniques.

Shipping and Quantities

We wrap all furniture in protective wrapping, carton faced cardboard and then we pack it in solid wood crates for delivery to your nearest seaport.

We don't have any minimum quantity and we can ship furniture as individual items (minimum quantity 2 cubic meters for best shipping cost value) or in whole containers.

Resources and Workmanship

We only use solid Teak wood - properly resourced from plantation wood from sustainable forests or reclaimed from old teak houses. Each piece is handmade and unique using classical joinery techniques - mortice and tenon and dovetail joints. We supply wholesale Indonesian teak furniture to customers worldwide.
